Flotation Technique

Disolved Air Flotation

Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) is known for the micro air bubbles which are dosed just before the inlet construction in the DAF unit. In its aeration system a part of the treated water together with air are brought under a pressure of 5 bar, where air dissolves in water. By reducing this pressure down to 1 bar in the specially designed and patented depressurasation nozzles small air bubbles of 30-50 micron are formed, which quickly stick to the impurities in the water and therefore cause a high degree of clarification. All impurities rise to the surface and are scraped off there with a automatically operating scraper mechanism.

Reaction sample Nijhuis Water Technology DAF systems differ from the traditional systems by:

  • patented clog free depressurasation nozzles
  • 60% saving on energy consumption due to unique aeration circuit
  • 50% higher dry solids content of the floated sludge by the standard installation of a sludge dewatering grid.
  • low overflow rates for a maximum separation efficiency
simple extension of the system with coagulation/flocculation systems for higher pollution reductions; see the special brochure !

Induced Air Flotation

NFF-seriesNFF-series

The NFF is a flotation system by which the impurities are separated from the water by using air. With Induced Air the rising velocity of a particle is increased by adding air bubbles of 100-150 micron to the water by a self air sucking aeration system which is installed just after the inlet construction. The air bubbles stick to the particles after which they rise to the surface from where they are scraped off by a scraper mechanism. Any sediment will be drained off by standard installed drain valves.

Gravity Flotation

NGF-seriesNGF

The NGF is a flotation system by which particles are separated from water by the difference in specific gravity from water. The floating layer will be scraped off by an automatically operating scraper mechanism.

The rising- or settling velocity of a particle is determined by its specific characteristics and the nature of the liquid. Stoke's Law describes this relation and allows us to calculate the rising- or settling velocity. Suitable as an alternative to an underground concrete separator, with the advantage that no soil contamination can occur.

Nijhuis Water Technology has a long term experience with flotation systems in a wide variety of applications. Our specialists would be pleased to advise you on the choice of the best flotation system and how this might be augmented with other high quality technology to create a fully integrated water treatment system which gives you the security you require.

Gravity separation systems

Nijhuis Water Technology gravity separation systems can be applied to solids/ liquid separation and liquid/liquid separation. The systems would typically be used where high separation rates are required. The main driving force in separation is the difference in density of the substances which are to be separated.

Nijhuis Water Technology has a diverse range of products supported by in-house technical expertise. Nijhuis Water Technology has experience in applying these products to a wide range of industries. The Nijhuis product range is divided into two main groups:

Gravity Separation Systems

Oil-Water Separation

Cross flow/Counter-current flow

Nijhuis has Oil-Water Separators in its product range, utilising three forms of separation techniques: flotation, sedimentation and 3-phase separation. All three techniques can utilise parallel-plate separators, which are available in cross-flow and counter-current flow configurations. It is also possible to include a coagulation/flocculation system upstream of the separator (please refer to our coagulation/flocculation leaflet).

CFS Cross Flow Separator

CFS-seriesThe CFS separator is a 3-phase separator, which is typically used as device for the separation of liquids with a density lower than water.
The CFS contains a cross flow plate pack and the intercepted oil layer is skimmed off by a manually adjustable skim pipe.
Heavy particles are collected and discharged via a conical bottom.

Some applications are:

·  Ballast water treatment
·  Oil-water separation

Typical features of the CFS Cross Flow Separator:

·  Very compact construction
·  Easily adapted to existing constructions
·  Suitable for effluents with strongly varying pollution and volumetric loads
·  Large sludge cone to treat oily waste water with high amounts of sediment

CSS Counter Current Separator

The CCS Counter Current Separator is comparable to the CFS, with the exception that it operates on the principle of counter current flow direction.

Typical features of the CCS Counter Current Separator:

·  Suitable for effluents with strongly varying pollution and volumetric loads
·  Suitable for short term periods with oil slugs
·  Easy upgraded to a Dissolved Air Flotation unit
·  Can easily be extended with a coagulation-flocculation step

PPA Module

PPA module working principleThe Nijhuis PPA module is a plate pack assembly which can be installed into a civil or steel construction. The PPA modules are available with various plate distances to make them suitable for various applications and for separation of particles lighter or heavier than water. The specific construction of the assembly has resulted in an increase of 15-20% effective working area in comparison to similar systems with the same external dimensions.

Some applications are:

·  Oil-water separation
·  Upgrading of existing API basins
·  Interchangeable with CPI plate packs

Solid-Liquid Separator

IPS Plate Separator

IPS working principleThe IPS Plate Separator is a three phase separator, applied primarily as a sedimentation unit for the separation of solid particles from liquid. Besides solids sedimentation, the IPS is also suitable for the interception and removal of floating materials, for which a skim pipe or mechanical scraper can be installed. The IPS is a two - stage settler. Easy, high rate settling solids are collected in the (smaller) first cone, the remainder of the relatively slow settling particles is separated by a cross-flow plate pack and collected in the second sludge cone. The sediment is thickened and discharged automatically through drain valves. As well as the IPS Cross Flow Settler, Nijhuis has a NPS Counter Current Settler in its product range. For the comparison between cross-flow and counter current flow, please refer to the Oil-Water Separators.

Some applications are:

·  Starch settling
·  Sand and clay interception
·  Activated sludge settling
·  Separator for coagulation/flocculation processes
·  Oil - water separation

Sand Screw Conveyor

IPS with SandcrewThe Nijhuis Sand Screw Conveyor is a small gravity settler with an integrated screw conveyor, which transports (and dewaters) the solids out of the settler before they are discharged.

Some applications are:

·  Sand and clay separation from water
·  Classification of particles
·  Dewatering of sand and clay
·  Separation and dewatering of effluent from flotation unit drains

Screenings Wash Unit

Screenings Wash UnitThe Nijhuis Screenings Wash Unit is a combination of a screen, a dewatering screw and a wash/spray unit.
This machine is applied where screenings need to be washed and organic substances have to be removed from the screenings to meet the disposal requirements.

Some applications are:

·  Washing of screenings from Sewage Treatment Works
·  Washing of industrial screenings

Nijhuis Water Technology has a long term experience with gravity separation systems. Our specialists will be pleased to advise you on the best system and how this might be augmented with other high quality technology from Nijhuis Water Technology to create a fully integrated water treatment system which gives you the security you require.
